For most of us, our jobs involve us working (and therefore being awake) in the daytime. But for some biologists, our research requires that we be awake at night in order to get the data we need; I’m a bat biologist, and for me to get my job done, I often need to be awake for part or most of the night.
Most animals that we are familiar with are awake in the daytime (i.e. “diurnal”), but many animals are crepuscular (i.e. active at dawn/dusk), or like my study species, active at night (i.e. “nocturnal”). Studying nocturnal animals can bring unique challenges, but is also incredibly rewarding and interesting because we researchers get to experience the world in a whole new way.
Us diurnal creatures naturally want to be asleep at night and active during the daytime, so you can imagine that working all night can wear down someone’s mental and physical health. To make it even worse, sometimes I still need to get some work done in the daytime, such as fueling up our field cars and entering in data, before our night work can begin (Fig. 1).

But despite all the physical and mental toll this hard work often takes, I feel so lucky to get to work with such amazing animals (can you fly??) and see the world from a whole new (sometimes dark) perspective (Fig. 2).
